Morristown Historic Preservation Association
Rewarded for Awareness Efforts
Peg Dankworth, MHPA Founder, Also Recognized
  • Each year, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office recognizes achievements in historic preservation by presenting awards in two categories: Public Education and Awareness, and Preservation Merit.

  • In 1991 and again in 2003, the Morristown Historic Preservation Association received a Public Education and Awareness Award while its founder, Margaret “Peg” Dankworth, received a Preservation Merit award in 1995 for her work in preserving Morristown and other historic sites in Belmont County.

  • The Public Education and Awareness Award is for increasing interest in historic preservation. The Preservation Merit Award is for preserving Ohio’s prehistory, history, architecture or culture.

  • In 1991, MHPA was recognized for building public awareness of Morristown's historic and architectural resources and the benefits of preserving them.

  • In 2003, the organization received the same award for its newly-developed website, www.morristownohio.com A portion of the nominating letter and home page of the original website are printed below:
This small, historic southeastern Ohio village has taken advantage of the potential of today’s technology to bring to others its history and activities.

Old Site

Our initial goal was to be “on-line” on our birthday (April 14, 2002). We hired a local 14-year old computer wiz with his own web design business (Dark Horse Networks) to take the ideas we had and create a site. We hope to make the site as informative as possible and enjoyable to use. In our first year, 3,569 “unique” visitors visited our site. The website was the source for information about our Bicentennial Events and helped turn out over 4,000 people for our Hot Air Balloon Festival.

As a special note, our welcome page and page header contain a line drawing by National Road artists, Vicky Burton, depicting the actual streetscape as one looks west along Main Street. A black and white version of this same drawing was used to produce a special U.S. Postal Service cancellation stamp to celebrate Morristown’s Bicentennial. Putting Historic Morristown on the World Wide Web, the information highway, shows that THIS National Road Town, after 200 years, is still on the road to the future.
